Many New Frog Species Found

February 8th, 2009 Posted in Updates | No Comments »

We love frogs here at FROG and this week many new frog species were found in Colombia and India according to MSN.com. Frogs are currently endangered in most of the world and are important indicators of climate change. Frogs also help scientists locate biodiversity hotspots, according to the MSN.com article. The new species found this week gives scientists a small hope for these amphibians:

“The fact that these areas still exist shows that we still have time, and we still have a chance,” he said. (Robin Moore, Amphibian Officer for Conservation International)

Better Solar Panels Through Butterfly Technology

February 6th, 2009 Posted in Updates | No Comments »

I like the sound of butterfly technology, it has a catchy ring to it. According to my favorite eco-friendly website, Treehugger, butterfly wings could lead to less expensive and more efficient solar panels through bio-mimicry.

Laboratory tests showed that the butterfly wing solar collector absorbed light more efficiently than conventional dye-sensitized cells. The fabrication process is simpler and faster than other methods, and could be used to manufacture other commercially valuable devices, the researchers say.

What a swell and beautiful idea. Maybe with a push towards renewable energy sources, this research will be utilized in the coming years in consumer friendly products.

FROG says, “Please don’t eat me!”

January 27th, 2009 Posted in Updates | No Comments »

I browse many of my favorite blogs for interesting stories and blog content, and Treehugger never lets me down. According to an article on Treehugger from Discovery News

The potential for frog population collapse from over harvesting is similar to what has happened with the world’s marine fisheries, Bradshaw said. “We should have learned our lesson from fish, and exactly the same thing is happening with frogs.”

I knew that frog legs were considered a delicacy in France, and I can understand frog meat being popular in Asia and South America. But I did not know, and can hardly believe, that the U.S. is the second largest consumer of frog meat after France, according to Treehugger. Here in the U.S. we have access to plenty of domesticated meats. We need to give frog populations a chance for survival and not eat them! (Besides, I love my FROG and frogs in general, but they are sort of slimy!)

GoDaddy Mobile added to FROG

January 14th, 2009 Posted in Updates | No Comments »

Many mobile web users are technology dorks, so for those of you out there (including myself!), FROG has added GoDaddy Mobile to help you manage your domain names on the go. I’m sure some people think this wouldn’t be very useful, but I can think of a number of times I thought of a new website idea, and needed to search for the availability of the domain. Domain names come and go quite quickly, so if you think of a great one and it’s available, you now can grab it right away with FROG. GoDaddy has been added in the Jump menu in the eTools and Shopping categories.

“Boys Bar” Bikes Not So Safe

January 9th, 2009 Posted in Updates | 1 Comment »

This seems like a no-brainer to anyone who has ever ridden a bike, but now it’s official. According to a Swedish study, “boys bar” bikes are unsafe for riders. My first thought is, “Oh really? I already knew that!” I ride quite often and rely on my “girls-type” bike for quick maneuvering on and off the bike. When I was younger, I had a small, yet painful, accident on a “boys bar” style bike and realized that bar is not safe, and I’m a girl! Now maybe for men or boys, riding a bike with a lower bar would be too feminine. However with the beach-cruiser style all the rage this seems like a moot point. Safety and comfort are high on my list for a pleasurable ride and this idea seems to correlate with the study findings:

It’s the ‘boy bar’ that all ‘male’ bikes use, and that are particularly important in racing bikes to maintain the stability of the bike. But when you are riding to the grocery store and back, a bike without the ball-crushing bar is much safer, Björnstig concluded, because the majority of accidents involve sudden stops and the necessity of quickly getting off and back on the bike.- Ulf Björnstig, Umeå University

Backpacker Mobile is down

January 6th, 2009 Posted in Updates | No Comments »

The mobile web is definitely up and coming with more people purchasing internet-enabled phones. However, it still has some signs of infancy, such as broken links which were once working. Backpacker Mobile is one of those links (see our previous post here). It has been disabled on FROG for all of our frequent FROG users and will be enabled once (and if) it becomes available again.

FROG has many other links to choose from for you mobile surfers, so keep surfing with FROG!
